Jim Furyk may not have had the excitement and flair in his game that many of the greatest players over the past few decades did, but he is still one of the most successful golfers to have graced the game since the turn of the century.
Furyk’s swing was, and still is, unconventional to say the least, but what he lacked in technique, he more than made up for with his exceptional short game and his incredible fighting spirit.
The now 55-year-old won one major throughout his career – the 2003 US Open at Olympia Fields Country Club. Perhaps he should have won more, but at least he managed to secure one of the four biggest trophies in the sport.
Furyk won 17 regular PGA Tour events and represented the United States at nine Ryder Cups and seven Presidents Cups.
He also captained his country once at each of those events.
However, in spite of all of those incredible achievements, perhaps his crowning moment came at the Travelers Championship back in 2016.
How Jim Furyk compiled his stunning round of 58 at the Travelers Championship
Furyk actually shot a 59 at the BMW Championship in 2013, but he went one better three years later at the Travelers Championship.
The 2003 US Open champion’s week at TPC River Highlands began in extremely average fashion, with rounds of 73, 66 and 72.
However, his final round was one of the most impressive 18 holes of golf anyone has ever played.
Furyk shot a 12-under par round of 58, and ended up in a tie for fifth at the Travelers.
Starting his round on the back nine, Furyk went out in an impressive four-under par 31 after four birdies and five pars, but greater things were to come for the American.
He came home in just 27 shots – eight-under par, following an incredible run of an eagle and six birdies, four of which came consecutively over his final four holes.
It was a sensational display of top-level concentration, elite mentality and precision from Furyk, and the fact that he was known as a ‘plodder’ rather than a ‘bomber’ made his round all the more impressive.

60 has been broken 13 times on the PGA Tour by 12 different men, with Furyk having done it twice.

Bryson DeChambeau shot a 58 on LIV Golf at Greenbrier in 2023, while Joaquin Niemann and Sebastian Munoz have both shot 59s on the Saudi-backed golf league.
Paul Goydos shot a 59 at the 2010 John Deere Classic, but it didn’t count officially due to the fact that lift, clean and place was in play during the tournament.
Only 10 men have broken 60 on the PGA Tour and Furyk stands alone at the top of the list with his truly stunning 58 at the Travelers Championship in 2016.
