Ian Poulter’s Ryder Cup playing career appears to be over, but he will always be remembered as a European legend.
Poulter arguably underachieved in his PGA Tour career, as he only won three times and was never considered one of the world’s top golfers.
However, the Englishman made a name for himself by consistently stepping up for the European team at the Ryder Cup.
Golf Retro now looks back on the time Poulter boldly promised that he would win one of his matches at Celtic Manor in 2010.

Poulter made his Ryder Cup debut and scored his first point in 2004. He then missed the 2006 Ryder Cup, but returned to the European team two years later.
He scored four points at the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla despite Europe’s defeat to the United States, the start of his reputation as a Ryder Cup specialist.
In 2010, Poulter improved his Ryder Cup record with wins in foursomes and fourballs to help Europe to an 8.5-6.5 lead before the Sunday singles.
Shortly before his match against Matt Kuchar, Poulter made an interesting comment in an interview with Sky Sports.
“I’m playing well. I’m looking forward to it. I live for the Ryder Cup. That’s why I’m here. I will deliver a point,” he claimed.
The reporter, surprised, then asked Poulter to double down on his statement, to which he replied: “I’ll deliver a point.”
Well, Poulter backed up his pre-match confidence with an impressive, and much-needed, 5 & 4 victory over Kuchar.
If there was any doubt before, Poulter proved himself as an elite Ryder Cup performer with his dominant display in 2010.

Ian Poulter played in seven Ryder Cups and scored 16 points, more than anyone besides Rory McIlroy (18) in the 2025 team.
He played well in all three formats (foursomes, fourballs, and singles), but his record in singles stands out as the most impressive.

Poulter won six out of his seven singles matches and halved the other. His biggest scalp was probably his 2 up win against world number one Dustin Johnson in 2018.
