The 2025 Ryder Cup has almost arrived, with Team Europe looking to cause a real upset against the United States.
Bethpage Black is the venue for the upcoming Ryder Cup, where the home side are set to receive huge support from a boisterous crowd.
It should immediately put Luke Donald’s Team Europe on the back foot, giving a real advantage to Keegan Bradley’s United States side.
Winning a Ryder Cup on away soil is an extremely difficult feat, as proven throughout the entire history of the prestigious tournament.
But simply defeating the United States was a very tough task in itself once upon a time, with the formidable side boasting a stunning run midway through the last century.
When Team Europe won their first Ryder Cup over the United States
The run was, however, brought to an end by the European players in 1985, who beat the United States 16½ – 11½ to secure their first win in 28 years.
But it was also significant for another reason, with the 1985 Ryder Cup representing a first-ever victory for Team Europe.

Previously, the side had competed in the team competition as either Great Britain or Great Britain & Ireland.

How Team Europe beat the United States at the 1985 Ryder Cup
It threatened to be another disappointing venture for Team Europe early on, with the United States taking a 3-1 lead after the Friday morning foursomes.
The hosts quickly recovered with a 2½ – 1½ win in the Friday afternoon four-ball, but still trailed going into the weekend.

There was, however, a complete turnaround on Saturday as Team Europe finished the day with a 9-7 lead.
And that superb momentum continued into the final day, where the home players thrived in the Sunday singles to clinch an unforgettable 16½ – 11½ victory.
An emotional Sam Torrance holed the winning putt, but it was Spanish duo Manuel Pinero and Seve Ballesteros who shone brightest with four points and 3.5 points respectively.
USA won the 1993 Ryder Cup at the Belfry as they exacted their revenge, with the teams having tied the event at the same venue in 1989.
